Workshop on the Use of Drones in Citizen Science

The Centre for Regional Geography within the Faculty of Geography at Babeș-Bolyai University and the Centre for Geographical Research of the Romanian Academy – Cluj-Napoca Branch, in partnership with the Mayoralty of Aiton, are organizing a workshop on the use of drones in citizen science.

Participants will learn about the benefits of drones and aerial imagery in participatory science, as well as citizens’ rights and obligations regarding the aerial data collected. Practical examples of information extracted from images will be presented, followed by a live demonstration of drone use by citizens and a Q&A session.

The initiative aligns with the Faculty of Geography’s areas of interest in citizen science, GIS, and drone applications for environmental monitoring and participatory mapping. The goal is to promote the responsible use of drones by the community, in accordance with current ethical and legal protocols.

The event will take place on 17 April 17 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, at the “Nicolae Bondoi” Cultural Centre in Aiton.

The initiative is aimed at the local community and is open to anyone interested in the practical applications of drones in participatory science.
