The Strategy for the Cluj Metropolitan Green Ring and Network Under Discussion at the Centre for Regional Geography

How Can the Cluj Metropolitan Area become ‘greener’? The Strategy for the Cluj Metropolitan Green Ring and Network Under Discussion at the Centre for Regional Geography

On 2 April 2026, the Centre for Regional Geography hosted a new edition of the CGR Meetings, dedicated to discussing the Strategy for the Cluj Metropolitan Green Ring and Network.

During her presentation, Alexandrina Kiss, Manager of Strategy and Development Department and representative of the Cluj Metropolitan Area Intercommunity Development Association, outlined the integrated vision and main directions of the strategy, emphasising the role of green-blue infrastructure and the green belt in increasing territorial resilience and improving quality of life. The need for a comprehensive approach at both the macro (metropolitan or sub-regional) and micro (local) levels was also emphasised.

The ensuing discussions highlighted a genuine interest in developing a coherent green network at the metropolitan level and the need to clarify certain aspects regarding the applicability of the proposed measures. Participants — including academics and researchers, specialists in territorial planning, local and regional development, environmental impact assessment and environmental planning, management of protected natural areas, hydrology, geomorphology and GIS, focused on the importance of aligning the strategy with urban planning tools, defining clear implementation mechanisms, and involving local communities in both the decision-making and the implementation processes. For the strategy to become an effective operational tool, it must be as visible and well-understood as possible at the local level. It is essential that authorities and citizens are informed and familiar with its objectives and benefits. Better communication can help build trust and foster active community involvement.

The debate confirmed the importance of this topic, as well as the need for continued dialogue and collaboration between academia, the public administration, civil society and the community, in order to develop a shared vision for the sustainable development of the Cluj Metropolitan Area.
