Between the 16th and the 19th of June 2014, representatives of the Europa Nostra organization and the European Investment Bank Institute came to Romania for a four-day mission at RoşiaMontană, on the occasion of the inclusion of RoşiaMontană site in “The 7 Most Endangered” programme, following its nomination by Pro Patrimonio Foundation. Europa Nostra and the European Investment Bank Institute have collaborated since 2012 in the development of “The 7 Most Endangered” programme, aiming to select those historical monuments of great cultural value that are currently in a state of decay.

The European delegation had several meetings with representatives of the academic community, civil society, and the local community in Cluj, Bucharest and RoşiaMontană in order to better perceive the reality in the field and to find solutions for the sustainable development of this locality by preserving and promoting its natural and cultural heritage.

During the visit at the Centre for Regional Geography on the 16th of June 2014, the working visit was focused on the following issues:

• the importance of “The 7 Most Endangered” programme launched by Europa Nostra and the inclusion of Roşia Montană on the 2013 List, with emphasis on the delicate state of this site;
• presentation of the scientific studies already achieved by Babeş-Bolyai University, especially the international conference and the volume Roşia Montană in Universal History(2012), elaborated at Professor Cocean’s initiative;
• the need for a viable development strategy for the whole area, namely for the Land of the Moţi, starting from the premise that an economic development cannot be achieved if the area is excluded from its regional territorial context;
• the need for alternative development solutions for RoşiaMontană site opposed to the exploitations proposed by the Canadian company Roşia Montană Gold Corporation (RMGC), withexamples of viable development models from Greece and Italy given by the members of the European delegation;
• possible sources of funding to ensure the achievement of the development strategy for Roşia Montană.

On the 17th and the 18th of April 2014, during his third visit to Romania, Professor Jean-Marie Miossec returned to Babeş-Bolyai University at the invitation of Professor PompeiCocean and the Faculty of Geography. On this occasion, he gave a lecture to the Master’s students of the Faculty of Geography on the current trends in regional development worldwide. The lecture was accompanied by the presentation of the book RivagesdʼEurope. Personnalité et avenir d’un continent ouvert, published by L’Harmattan, with a comprehensive overview of geopolitics in Europe.

Professor Miossec’s first visit to Romania was related to the establishment of the first Institute of Regional Studies in Romania (2009) as Professor Miossec is considered one of the most important contemporary European regionalists. This rating is substantiated by Professor Miossec’s militancy for the administrative organization of France based on regional principles.

Between the 25th and the 27th of November 2013, the Centre for the Study of Territorial Development of the Faculty of European Studies and the Centre for Regional Geography of the Faculty of Geography, in partnership with the Brazilian Cultural Centre “Casa do Brasil” of Babeş-Bolyai University, organized the visit of Professor JandirFerrera de Lima, Vice-Rector of Unioeste, Toledo, Brazil. Graduate in Economics at the University of Cruz Alta, Brazil, with a Master’s degree in the same field at the University of Bahia and a PhD in Regional Development at the University of Quebec, Chicoutimi, Canada, Mr JandirFerrera de Lima is Professor at Unioeste, Toledo, since 1997. He is also member of the International Association of Regional Sciences and of the Research Centre for Spatial Development, Canada.

Professor Ferrera de Lima’s visit represented a good opportunity for discussions on regional issues, the initiation of cooperation agreements at institutional level, encouragement of exchanges of undergraduate students, application for specific Romania-Brazil bilateral cooperation projects or publication of scholarly papers in the journals of the two universities. During the “Brazilian Nights” event, Professor Ferrera de Lima delivered a lecture on territorial development entitled “Interventions in Rural Development” (in French), enjoying an exciting feedback from the audience.

At the beginning of 2012, at the invitation of the Centre for Agricultural and Applied Economic Sciences of the University of Debrecen, Hungary, to create a partnership that aims to develop the Tisa River Basin, the Centre for Regional Geography was represented at the meeting by two members – Mr RaularianRusu and Mr SorinFilip, both lecturers at the Faculty of Geography. The meeting with representatives of other universities and research institutions, such as Dr.SzikuraJószef and Dr.OroszIldikó, FerencRákoczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian Institute (Ukraine), Dr. Nagy Vilmos, Institute of Hydrology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava (Slovakia), Dr.IvánszkyVeronika, University of Novi Sad (Serbia), Professor Sinóros-SzabóBotond, University of Debrecen, Professor Nagy János, Centre for Agricultural and Applied Economic Sciences of the University of Debrecen, Professor BaranyiBéla, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Centre for Regional Studies, Alföld Institute, Debrecen Department, Professor DévaiGyörgy, Dr. Nagy Sándor Alex and Professor LigetváriFerenc, University of Debrecen, BiróGábor, Dr. Nagy István and Kiss Attila, the Eastern Triple Border Research and Development Centre, Mátészalka (Hungary), represented an appropriate framework to establish a partnership agreement between the countries situated on the Tisa River and to elaborate a joint strategy for the rural development in the Tisa River Basin.
