In December, the Centre for Regional Geography hosts the presentation of the partial results of the Remarkable Romania project, managed by Cluj Cultural Centre. The project aims to create a network of settlements connected by the cultural heritage they own, and which can generate examples of sustainable territorial management. The presentation is given by Ştefan Teişanu, executive director of Cluj Cultural Centre, and Mihai Giurgiu, manager of the project. The event will take place on Friday, 13 December 2019, at 2 p.m.

The existing connection between psychology, geography and territorial planning and the exploration of new research frontiers are the main topics of debate at the November edition of the CGR Meetings. The guest speaker is Professor Daniel David, Ph.D., an “Aaron T. Beck” Professor of Clinical Cognitive Neurogenetic Sciences and Vice-Rector of Research, Competitiveness-Excellence and Scientific Publications at Babeş-Bolyai University. The event will take place on Thursday, 28 November 2019, at 12.00, at the headquarters of the Centre for Regional Geography.

The dialogue with stakeholders in regional planning and development will continue also in June. The guest speaker of the month is Radu Cocean, Lecturer at Babeş-Bolyai University, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration. The topic of the debate, Errors in Formulating Regional Development Strategies, is devoted to risk management in development strategies. The event will take place on Tuesday, 11 June 2019, at 12 p.m. at the headquarters of the Centre for Regional Geography.

Following the participation in the public tender organized by the North-West Regional Development Agency, the Centre for Regional Geography has contracted the project Consultancy Services for the Elaboration of a Study on the Inventory, Assessment and Prioritization of Tourism Resources in the North-West Region. The project development period is six months (May - December 2019).

The Centre for Regional Geography organizes a practical training in the Land of Maramureş aimed at the students of the Faculty of Geography at all academic levels and study lines, regardless of their specialization. Its purpose is to train students to apply their acquired basics and specialist knowledge, familiarize them with certain research methods and techniques and support them in developing new skills.

The subject of the practical training is focused on capturing some facets of multiculturalism in a territory with visible materializations of the cohabitation and interference of several ethnic groups. Each of the five themes proposed launches a challenge but also emphasizes a specific trait: 1. Valorization of the Vernacular Heritage. Case study: the Village of Iapa, Sighetu Marmaţiei; 2. Valorization of the Ukrainian Gastronomy. Case study: Cornet Boarding House, Rona de Sus; 3. From Pre-Christian Symbols to Brand. Case study: Bârsana; 4. Development of a Thematic Cultural Route. Case study: the Merry Cemetery in Săpânţa; 5. The Cabbage Festival – an Event to Valorise an Agricultural Product. Case study: Câmpulung la Tisa.

The field research will take place between the 15th and the 19th of April 2019.

The Centre for Regional Development, Cross-border Studies and Territorial Planning (CDR-START) within the West University of Timişoara (Timişoara, Romania) in partnership with the Centre for Regional Geography within Babeş-Bolyai University (Cluj-Napoca, Romania), ESO Laboratory (UMR 6590 CNRS) within the University of Angers (Angers, France) and the Laboratory of Demographic Studies of the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova (Chişinău, Republic of Moldova) has participated in the call for proposals launched by the Francophone University Agency (AUF) in partnership with the Institute for Atomic Physics (IFA) with a project on “Heritage and Urban Renewal: Creative Spaces, Inclusive Culture and Civic Engagement”.

The project CREATONVIL/17-AUF has been selected for funding and will have a 22-month implementation period (March 2019 – December 2020).

Beginning with December 2018, the Centre for Regional Geography initiates a series of meetings aimed at discussing territorial development issues. The meetings are addressed to academics, researchers, students, and other specialists in areas related to topics of discussion.

The first event of this series is a presentation on“Urban Mobility in Cluj-Napoca” , held by Associate Professor Norbert Petrovici, from the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work at Babeş-Bolyai University.

Between the 23^rd and the 27^th of October 2017, Assoc. Prof. Raularian Rusu, PhD, head of the Centre for Regional Geography, and Teaching Assistant Gheorghe Hognogi, PhD, coordinated the field trip for the 1^st year students in Territorial Planning at the Faculty of Geography, entitled “Ecological Education and Territorial Planning in Zărand Mountains and Târnova Commune, Arad County”. Initiated as an introduction in the subject of territorial planning, the fieldtrip was a good opportunity for the 25 students involved to work in teams, in several groups focusing on different subjects, to get to know a part of the trails in Zărand Mountains and to draw up a diagnostic analysis for the 6 villages comprised in Târnova commune, Arad County (Târnova, Chier, Dud, Agrișu Mare, Drauț, Arăneag).

Between the 2nd and the 6th of May 2017, the Centre for Regional Geography is organising a practical training in the Land of Năsăud (Ţara Năsăudului) and the District of Ciceu (Ţinutul Ciceului), two genuine geographical mental spaces. The practical training is aimed at the students of the Faculty of Geography at all academic levels and study lines, regardless of their specialization. Its purpose is to train students to apply their acquired basics and specialist knowledge, familiarise them with certain research methods and techniques and support them in developing new skills. The theme is focused on economic activities in rural areas. The practical training involves the elaboration of several spatial plans focused on proposing concrete solutions to support the economic development of a certain selected area and to serve the local communities involved.

South Muntenia Regional Development Agency, in collaboration with the Centre for Regional Geography, organizes the session on “Integrated Solutions for Urban Development in the Framework of the Implementation of Cohesion Policy 2014-2020” at Dâmboviţa County Council, in Târgovişte, on 25-26 November. The information session is aimed at analysing and identifying integrated solutions for sustainable urban development in the framework of the implementation of the Regional Operational Programme 2014-2020. At the same time, the event aims to support smart cities (programmatic objective of the EU, included in Europe 2020 strategy) and their transformation using innovative solutions to create a more efficient system of urban area management, use and sustainability.

International Conference on Regional Development and Territorial Disparities

Following the call for project proposals of the Francophone University Agency (L’Agence universitaire de la Francophonie - AUF), the Centre for Regional Geography under Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, in partnership with the West University of Timişoara (Romania), the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova, Chişinău (Republic of Moldova) and the University of Angers (France), is implementing the project “Demographic Disparities in Rural Areas” during the period 16 August 2016 - 16 October 2017. The project is funded under PN III Programme/ Sub-programme 3.1. Bilateral/multilateral/ Module AUF-RO. The project’s degree of originality derives from the interdisciplinary of the created partnership and of the research teams, on the one side, and the identification, access and transfer of good practices from the partner states to the Romanian rural areas, on the other side. The overall objective of the project is to develop recommendation guidelines on alleviating demographic disparities in the Romanian rural areas, focused on the Poiana Ruscă Mountains.

A tripartite international project (Ziarul Făclia)

While participating in a mobility programme at the universities of Bucharest, Iaşi and Cluj-Napoca, Mr Azzedine Madani, Associate Professor at Djilali Bounaama Khemis Miliana University, Khemis Miliana, Algeria, also visited the Centre for Regional Geography. On this occasion, an agreement of institutional cooperation was signed between Babeş-Bolyai University and Djilali Bounaama Khemis Miliana University. With an extensive expertise in territorial planning, Mr Madani will return to Cluj-Napoca in October 2016 on the occasion of the 7th edition of the International Conference on Regional Development and Territorial Disparities.

CoR head Markku Markkula: Former providers of cheap labour transitioning into digital hubs

Between the 27th of April and the 2nd of May 2015, the second-year students in Territorial Planning at the Faculty of Geography, Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, together with a team of young researchers and teaching staff members of the Centre for Regional Geography, had their specialty practical training in the Land of Haţeg, Romania. The aim of the practical training was to apply their basics and specialist knowledge required for spatial planners and work on the elaboration of a spatial plan using specific research methods. The practical training included the elaboration of five projects (Arrangement of the Râul Alb River Basin, Arrangement of Fundătura Ponorului, Restoration of the Royal Fortress of Haţeg, Reconstruction of the Băuţar-Subcetate Railway, Arrangement of the Village of Goteşti). The results of the five projects will be published in a volume in 2016.

Completed in July 2015, the White Paper on Integrated Sustainable Development of the Danube River Basin is the outcome of a cooperation between Danube Rectors’ Conference (DRC) and Alps-Adriatic Rectors’ Conference (AARC) and it was initiated by a team from the Core universities of the Danube:Future project, a Flagship project of the Priority Area 7 of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region. The document was discussed and completed at the first Danube:Future Workshop in Klagenfurt, Austria, on 8-10 April 2015. Subsequently, other representatives of the academic community contributed to the final version of the paper. Therefore, the Danube:Future White Paper was prepared in a bottom-up process that involved more than 50 researchers in Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities from the majority of Danube countries. The Centre for Regional Geography was represented in this process by Lelia Papp, Lecturer at the Faculty of Geography and member of the Centre for Regional Geography, and Ana-Maria Papp, Research fellow at the same Centre. The paper aims to support the more than 90 member universities of DRC and AARC in their efforts to promote a sustainable knowledge society, taking into account the research and capacity building needs, and challenges and opportunities for the development of the sustainability-oriented knowledge society of the Danube River Basin. The document also includes a series of recommendations for future research that take into account inter- and transdisciplinary approaches and are based on principles of precautionary action, public participation, social learning and responsible research.

2015 Edition | Danube:Future Project

Danube:Future Network was developed in 2012 under the coordination of Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt (AAU), University of Trieste (UNITS) and University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU) and later, in 2013, it was adopted as a flagship project of the Priority Area 7 of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region. Local, regional, national and supranational initiatives in interdisciplinary sustainable research combined with capacity building and networking contribute to the sustainable development of the Danube River Basin. The sustainable development of the Danube River Basin involves elements of natural and cultural heritage, perceived both as an opportunity and as a challenge. Aimed at encouraging the member states of the Danube Region to cooperate, in line with the EU recommendations, Danube:Future Network will organize the first international Danube:Future Workshop on the role of cultural and natural heritage for the sustainable development of the Danube Region in April 2015 at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt facilities.

The Ministry of Regional Development and Public Administration, in compliance with Law no. 350/2001 on Spatial and Urban Planning, as subsequently amended and supplemented, has drafted the Territorial Development Strategy of Romania, subtitled Polycentric Romania 2035. Territorial Cohesion and Competitiveness, Development and Equal Opportunities for People, a long-term programmatic document, which stipulates the main development directions of Romania. After the final version is approved, this document will substantiate the regional, county and local strategic documents (territorial development strategies, spatial plans, urban plans and other documents with major territorial impact).

International Conference on Regional Development and Territorial Disparities

The exhibition “A Decade of Spatial Planning in Romania”, organized by the Union of Romanian Architects and “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism, in partnership with the Romanian Professional Association of Urban Planners and the Romanian Register of Urban Planners has arrived in Cluj-Napoca, at the Tailors’ Tower. The exhibition comprises 59 works achieved by different teams of Romanian urban and spatial planners, as well as student works. The Faculty of Geography of Babeş-Bolyai University is present with four posters presenting the outputs and results of four spatial plans developed by the members of the Centre for Regional Geography: Zonal Spatial Plan – Mărginimea Sibiului, Update to the County Spatial Plan – Maramureş County, Sinaia – Azuga – Buşteni – Predeal – Râşnov – Braşov - Poiana Braşov Inter-municipal Spatial Plan and Tisa Catchment Area Development (TICAD).

Building Rules of Cluj-Napoca afront the urban planning projects of the neighbours (Actual de Cluj)

On Thursday, 20 June 2014, the Romanian Cultural Institute held a public debate on the “Regionalization of Romania”. The meeting was organized by the Romanian Geographical Society and the Romanian Cultural Institute. Acad. Dan Bălteanu, Director of the Institute of Geography of the Romanian Academy, Prof. Mihai Ielenicz, President of the Romanian Geographical Society and Prof. Pompei Cocean, Director of the Centre for Regional Geography of Babeş-Bolyai University took part in the debate. The territorial-administrative division of the country, or regionalization, aroused intense discussions at national level, the proposed regional administrative boundaries following different criteria.

Several representatives of Europa Nostra Association and the European Investment Bank Institute were present in Cluj-Napoca, Roşia Montană and Bucharest between the 16th and the 19th of June 2014, following the inclusion of Roşia Montană site in “The 7 Most Endangered” programme. In the press conference “Roşia Montană Should Become a Model of Sustainable Development in Europe” held in Bucharest on the 19 of June 2014, Mr Costa Carras, Vice-President of Europa Nostra, insisted on the importance of cultural heritage in the history of a nation and the need of the present generation to valorise the legacy of our ancestors. In Cluj-Napoca, he mission held a series of important meetings with members of the academic community and civil society, at the Centre for Regional Geography, and also with the President of the Romanian Chamber of Architects.

Roşia Montană Should Become a Model of Sustainable Development in Europe

Addressing the topic “The Role of Natural Heritage for the Sustainable Development of the Danube Region”, the second edition of DIAnet International School was held in Gorizia, Italy, between the 22nd and the 31st of March 2014. During the 2014 edition, 40 participants from different member states of the Danube Region attended the training. Their challenge was to draft projects for the development and valorisation of the natural heritage in the Danube Basin. Romania was represented by five participants from Babeş-Bolyai University, out of which, Lelia Papp, Lecturer at the Faculty of Geography, and Gheorghe-Gavrilă Hognogi, PhD student, represented the Centre for Regional Geography.

2014 Edition | Danube:Future Project

The first edition of DIAnet International School was held in Gorizia, Italy, between the 13th and the 22nd of April 2013. The 2013 edition of the International School, part of the project “DIANET – Danube Initiative and Alps-Adriatic Network”, co-financed by the European Social Fund 2007-2013 and the University of Trieste, was focused on “Interdisciplinary Methods for the Sustainable Development of the Danube Region”. Lectures throughout the week introduced to participants a host of interdisciplinary approaches for dealing with the roles of cultural and natural heritage in sustainable development. Participants were challenged to use interdisciplinarity to achieve viable development projects in the Danube Region. Researcher III Ana-Maria Pop, PhD and Izabela-Amalia Mihalca, PhD student, represented the Centre for Regional Geography.
