SESSION ON “INTEGRATED SOLUTIONS FOR URBAN DEVELOPMENT IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF COHESION POLICY 2014-2020”

The information session, organized at the headquarters of Dâmboviţa County Council, in Târgovişte, brought together academics from Cluj-Napoca and Bucharest, students, and representatives of local authorities in the South Muntenia Development Region.

The information session was aimed at:
1. Analysing and identifying integrated solutions for sustainable urban development in the framework of the implementation of the Regional Operational Programme 2014-20202.
2. Supporting smart cities (programmatic objective of the EU, included in Europe 2020 strategy) and their transformation using innovative solutions to create a more efficient system of urban area management, use and sustainability.

Organisers: The Centre for Regional Geography under Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, in collaboration with the Romanian Academy, Cluj Subsidiary, Geography Section and the South Muntenia Regional Development Agency

The main objective of this scientific event was to bring together leading scientists, researchers, scholars, PhD students and specialists in various fields to present their research results and discuss the new trends and the challenges of regional development.

The 2016 ICRD conference addressed the following themes:
1. Achievements on regional development (from past to present)
The first theme addressed the theoretical and practical framework of regional development, rendered through the impact of regional development in the territory, the typologies of regional disparities and the optimal management of the current dysfunctions.
2. Challenges and scenarios for the future regional development
The second theme was intended for a particular perspective on the future of regional development, taking into account the main challenges in the field, the policies implemented by the responsible decision makers in order to create a sustainable development or the identification of a specific regional identity.

The themes were thoroughly debated by the more than 60 participants from Algeria, Canada, Hungary, Iran, Republic of Moldova, Romania, and Slovenia.

The conference aimed to celebrate the Centre’s achievements during its 10 years of activity and, together with the conference participants, to set up a common platform on the phenomenon of regional development in the coming years by anticipating future challenges.

The conference addressed the following two themes: Achievements on regional development (from past to present), addressing the theoretical and practical framework of regional development, rendered through the impact of regional development in the territory, the typologies of regional disparities and the optimal management of the current dysfunctions, and Challenges and scenarios for the future regional development, intended for a particular perspective on the future of regional development, taking into account the main challenges in the field, the policies implemented by the responsible decision makers in order to create a sustainable development or the identification of a specific regional identity.

More than 110 participants from Hungary, Italy and Romania attended the conference.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON “REGIONALIZATION AND REGIONAL POLICIES”

The national conference on “Regionalization and Regional Policies” offered the opportunity for a high academic and scientific discussion on an effervescent topic – regionalization – which has lately produced many discussions, analyses and challenges both among policy makers and within the social, economic and cultural environment. Besides the two conference sections – History, Communities, Societies, Regionalization and Regional Economics and Sustainable Development – the event included also the presentation of the book România şi politici regionale [Romania and Regional Policies], written by a team of authors consisting of Adrian Gorun, Ion Ghizdeanu, Horațiu Tiberiu Gorun and Gabriela Radu.

THE 5th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON “REGIONAL DISPARITIES: TYPOLOGY , IMPACT, MANAGEMENT”

The conference aimed to encourage participants to share their ideas on the evolution of regional phenomena and set up a common platform on the issues related to regional development. Focused on the issue of regional disparities, the conference included more than 70 papers presented in three sections: National and International Disparities; Intraregional Disparities; Urban and Intra-urban Disparities.

THE 10th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ROMANIAN REGIONAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION AND THE 8th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON “EUROPEAN ECONOMIC RECOVERY AND REGIONAL STRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATIONS”

Organisers: The Romanian Regional Science Association, in collaboration with Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca and the North-West Regional Development Agency, Cluj-Napoca

Hosted by Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca - Faculty of Economic Sciences and Business Administration, in partnership with the Faculty of European Studies and the Faculty of Geography, the conference included more than 80 papers and more than 150 participants from various universities, research institutes and administrative institutions from Romania and abroad.

Viewed from the perspective of interdisciplinarity, the conference theme followed the main development directions of the European regional phenomenon, namely the effects of the transition economy on territorial cohesion, regional clusters and SMEs, the paradigm of the new economic growth, endogenous economic growth, rural and regional interferences, governance in the knowledge-based society, migration and job market imbalances.

THE 4th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON “REGIONAL DISPARITIES: TYPOLOGY , IMPACT, MANAGEMENT”

Following the theme of the previous editions, the conference was focused on discussing the latest concerns and research on regional development, the typology, impact and practices for mitigating regional disparities, finding sustainable alternatives for regions or areas in decline.

The 2010 ICRD conference brought together 120 participants from France, Hungary, Italy, Romania, and Slovenia and included 85 papers presented in four sections.

THE 3rd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON “REGIONAL DISPARITIES: TYPOLOGY , IMPACT, MANAGEMENT”

Placed under the sign of interdisciplinarity, the conference facilitated the national and international collaboration in research on the impact of regional disparities and the identification of solutions and viable alternatives for sustainable regional development.

More than 70 participants from Hungary, Romania and the UK attended the 2008 ICRD conference and more than 50 papers were presented in three sections. The conference was marked by the ceremony of awarding the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Professor Marina Todorovič, academic and researcher at the Geographical Institute “Jovan Cvijić” of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Belgrade, Serbia.

Following the positive feedback from participants in the first edition, the second edition of the international conference paid special attention to regional disparities, an extremely topical and fertile issue, with high practical value. Disparities are antipodal to territorial cohesion and their mitigation or elimination is a goal of any spatial planning activity and any economic and social development strategy. Highlighting their forms, typology, and especially their management are topics of great interest that the conference will consider every two years.

As a result, the second edition came to bring together 80 participants from six countries (France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Republic of Moldova, and Romania) and the 55 papers that were presented during the conference addressed various issues related to regional development and territorial disparities.

THE FIRST EDITION OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON “THE CONCEPT OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL REGION AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 21st CENTURY”

The conference is dedicated to sharing ideas on the evolution of the concept of geographical region, seen from different perspectives, and the criteria used for its delimitation.

The first edition of the conference was marked by the presence of 57 participants from five European countries: Austria, Germany, Hungary, Romania, and Ukraine and included the presentation of 35 papers focused on topics such as delimitation of geographical regions, regionalization, typology of regions, regional convergence and divergence, resilience of regional systems, cross-border regional development, analysis of profoundly lagging-behind areas, and a thorough investigation of various concepts specific to regional science.
